#28: Poorly Maintained Roadways
Cuba’s road conditions present significant challenges for motorists, with only around 38,000 miles of highways, nearly half of which are in poor repair. Driving across the island can be especially hazardous at night, as many major roads lack proper lighting and clear markings, while others feature confusing or faded signage.

The combination of deteriorating infrastructure, aging vehicles, and widespread mechanical neglect—exacerbated by decades of economic hardship and bureaucratic inefficiency—has contributed to rising accident rates. In the first half of 2019 alone, Cuba reported an average of 29 traffic-related injuries per day.
